S2S – Dublin City’s Cycleway
S2S means Sutton to Sandycove. It is a dedicated, level, 22 kilometre, off-road cycleway and promenade from Sutton on the northside of Dublin to Sandycove on its southside. Once completed, it will be longest, level, off-road capital city cycleway in Europe!
S2S now needs the support of everyone to get the S2S built and branded. We need all the relevant local authorities: Dublin City Council, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, and Fingal Council, as well as Government funding to commit to its completion. Once completed, S2S will offer a safe, level, off-road option to travel to school, to college, to work, for leisure, for health and exercise, while enjoying the beauty of Dublin Bay. Dublin will then become a bay city, to rival the best bay cities. S2S will create employment along its route. Cafes, delis, bicycle sale, hire and repair shops and other enterprise will benefit. It can link up with the successful Dublin City Bikes and can be joined up to existing cycle routes such as the canal cycleway and others. Getting people out on their bikes will leave Dublin’s congested streets to those who must travel by car. Parents will allow their children to cycle to school and for leisure. Commuters will love the fast, safe, off-road, level option to work and home. Tourists and citizens alike will experience a totally new aspect of Dublin’s bay-side beauty.
My connections to S2S? As a cyclist, I got interested in S2S when I heard about it way back in 2001. I am now active in a voluntary capacity in lobbying and informing local representatives on getting S2S up and running. As a nutritionist, I am interested in the health and environmental aspects and benefits that S2S will bring to Dublin and its citizens.
